Helping Young Writers at the Point of Writing
Richard Fox

Selected results from a study of experienced teachers of the early stages of writing are analysed in the light of a view of the process of composition as involving a cycle of two-phases: engagement and reflection. Children's difficulties in sustaining their attention across successive phases of this cycle are attributed to specific problems with transcription and with their grasp of the constraints shaping the writing task. Experienced teachers are seen to be acting so as to mend such lapses in attention and to both model and scaffold the process of reflection as part of the process of composition.
