Computers and Reasoning Through Talk in the Classroom
Rupert Wegerif and Neil Mercer

We propose an approach to teaching reasoning through talk in classrooms which integrates group work around computers into curriculum-related activities. The rationale for this approach lies in a communicative, sociocultural perspective on intellectual development and the process of education in schools. We also draw on recent research on collaborative learning which points to the importance of the quality of classroom talk for the construction of shared knowledge and for enabling children to join educated communities of discourse. Finally, we describe a programme of research in which, using specifically designed software, the computer is used to encourage and direct primary school children's explicit, joint reasoning through talk, in curriculum-related activities.
