Teaching India in the EFL-Classroom: A Cultural or an Intercultural Approach?
|

The concept of English as a world language implies that the focus of English teaching should not only be on the traditional countries and cultures such as Britain and the United States. Simultaneously,
English teaching should also develop learners' intercultural sensitivity. The choice of India as a focus for English teaching provides both a wider range of interest and also the means for developing awareness
of cultural diversity. The latter, however, requires not just cognitive but also affective engagement with teaching materials, and many textbooks have not yet achieved the means to develop both. This article
provides a critical analysis of textbooks in Germany that are beginning to offer new approaches.
