Learning Culture by Communicating: Native–Non-Native Speaker Telephone Interactions
Gisèle Holtzer

This paper reports on a research programme (the SCOTLANG program) set up to study the development of L2 interactive skills and sociocultural competence among English and French native speaker university students as evidenced in a communicative context. The preliminary findings reported here concern the acquisition of informal register by L2 speakers and the handling of topic development in native–non-native speaker telephone conversations. In addition, the exolinguistic nature of the bilingual interactions leads to L1–L2 code-switching as native speakers assist non-native speaker comprehension. Other L1–L2 code-switching phenomena are described but not yet accounted for at the present early stage of the project.
