Under Two Flags: National Conflicts and the Reconstruction of Identity

This paper explores the participation of the French Foreign Legion in national conflicts (from colonial conquest to peace-keeping) and its impact on the imagined community constituted by the unit. Implicit to the notion of the Legion as refuge and fellow legionnaires as a band of brothers are narratives of identity and difference grounded in mutual or asymmetrical attributions of inside versus outside, familiarity versus alienness, self versus other. The intention is to show how the external forces of nationalism and ethnicity during conflicts impact upon the internalised nationalism and ethnicity of the Legion's peacetime communal balance. This dialectical tension can lead to a band of brothers composed of Cains and Abels.

Cet article explore la participation de la Légion étrangère dans des conflits nationaux (de la conquête coloniale au maintien de la paix) et son impact sur la communauté imaginée, constituée par l'unité. L'idée de la Légion comme refuge et celle des légionnaires comme une bande de frères sont un récit d'identité et de différence basées sur des attributions mutuelles ou asymétriques comme intérieur contre extérieur, familier contre inconnu, individu contre autre. L'intention est de montrer comment, pendant les conflits, les forces externes du nationalisme et de l'appartenance ethnique effectuent sur le nationalisme et sur l'appartenance ethnique internalisés de l'équilibre communautaire de la Légion, en temps de paix. Cette tension dialectale peut mener à une bande de frères tels que Caïn et Abel.
