Planning and Control of Environmental Performance in Hotels
Jerónimo De Burgos-Jiménez, Carlos Jesús Cano-Guillén and José Joaquín Céspedes-Lorente

This article approaches the concept of environmental performance in hotels as a premise to laying down a foundation for its planning and control as a strategic objective of the company. In this way, a differentiation is made between the concepts of environmental management and performance. We concentrate on the latter. Likewise, the various options that can be used to measure environmental performance are analysed, along with the dimensions that should be considered in its evaluation. Subsequently, certain ways of measuring and evaluating hotel environmental performance are suggested, along with considerations and limitations that should be taken into account in this area. Finally, we explain how environmental performance in hotels can contribute to providing them with a sustainable competitive advantage.
