As the opening paper for this theme issue focusing on sustainable tourism development in Central and Eastern Europe, this paper has three functions. First, it addresses the geographical, political and transformational
context for sustainable tourism development in Central and Eastern Europe. Second, it discusses the potential of, and some of the key issues confronted by, such development and its management in the region.
Third, as an introduction to this special issue, it briefly summarises the set of papers which follow.
