Genesis and Evolution of the Romance-Germanic Language Border in Europe
Luc Van Durme

After a discussion of the various language border theories for the Belgian-Northern French area, a status quaestionis summarises the results of 40 years' research into the development of the Romance-Germanic
language border at large. Not a prehistoric Celtic-Germanic, but a late Roman Latin-Germanic opposition has functioned as a direct predisposition for the early medieval Romance-Germanic language border.
In the last section microtoponymy is considered a promising approach for future investigation.
