|

Every language system contains mechanisms for interpreting the relative truth value of claims made by speakers. Kirundi and Kinyarwanda- two closely related African1 languages- use the concept of traditional
oath forms to enable speakers to interpret and negotiate the understanding of the relative truth value of claims. The use of traditional oath forms in these languages is distinctly different from practices
in European (colonial) languages.
