The Maori Language Commission of New Zealand promoted 1995 as a year for the celebration of the Maori language. The Commission used the theme-year concept to facilitate a concerted promotione
aimed at both Maori people and the general New Zealand population. The Commission established three basic goals for the theme year: encouraging Maori people to learn and use the language; cee
place of the language in New Zealand history and modern society; and generating goodwill among the general population towards the Maori language. The Commission was able to generate significt
and commercial sponsorship for Maori language activities, which was used to create opportunities for Maorilanguage learning and use, and to promote goodwill.
