Environmental Education in Albanian Elementary and High Schools
Nevila Sokoli and Dhimiter Doka
Department of Geography, University of Tirana, Tirana, Albania

Environmental education in Albania has been given a boost recently, with increasing emphasis being placed on it by the country's educational system. At pre-school and elementary education levels, the 'Head Start project' is significant, while the introduction of a separate subject entitled 'Knowledge of the environment' intended for the 9th and the 10th grades is also important. After briefly describing the strong and weak points of environmental education at each education level in Albania, it is concluded that environmental education still needs improvements, in terms of quality and quantity. The NGOs and the supply of environment-related literature can be helpful in raising the standards of environmental education in the country.
