Proposals for a Geography Curriculum '2000+' for Germany
Josef Birkenhauer

The article states the main reason for setting up a National German Committee for the Teaching of Geography (i.e. an attempt to unify the very divergent study programmes for Geography within the 16 German states) and then goes on to describe the guidelines for a unified study programme agreed upon by the committee. The main lines are: six basic concepts, a basic triangular system, stress on spatial competence, awareness of what is meant by 'geographical space', the importance of geography as a key subject in school, explicit formulations of educational objectives for the geographical field, the five main geographical fields for such objectives, the treatment and grading of subject matter and regions.
