Status of Geography and Geographic Education within the Commonwealth of Kentucky
Keith R. Mountain and David A. Howarth

In the early 1990s the public educational system of the Commonwealth of Kentucky was radically altered with the adoption of the Kentucky Education Reform Act (KERA). This reform was intended to more adequately balance the state's distribution of funding for K–12 education, ensure the implementation of a standards-based curricula, provide quality professional development for teachers and ensure high-stakes assessment. Working with the National Geographic Society, the Kentucky Geographic Alliance has capitalized on the initiatives that form the core of KERA to ensure that geography is embedded in the core curriculum and that teachers are exposed to quality and effective professional development. As such, a cooperative approach to provide funding for teacher education in geography has been developed to promote the value of geography and provide pathways for teacher and student education in the fundamental concepts of geography. To that end, Kentucky is now recognized for the effective implementation of learning standards and school accountability with geography as an integral and a well-recognised component of the overall K–12 statewide curriculum.
