Landscapes, Land Degradation and Aridification in Geographical Education: The Case of Hungary
Fivos Papadimitriou and Ferenc Probald

Landscape-related problems, such as land degradation (soil and ecosystem degradation) and desertification, appear increasingly significant worldwide. Yet, it is questionable whether high school geographical education adequately includes such subjects in its agenda. Consequently, this paper tackles the general question 'To what extent do actual high school geography schoolbooks in Hungary present landscape-related environmental problems?'. After the condition of environmental and geographical education in Hungary has been assessed, it is examined whether the Hungarian schoolbooks of geography contribute to environmental education by dealing with the pertinent environmental problems related to the landscapes of the country. It is concluded that the content of geography schoolbooks has to be re-appraised, particularly with respect to their relevance to landscape-related environmental education.
