Fieldwork in the Dutch Mountains - A Bridge Too Far?

Fieldwork does not have a strong position in the secondary geography curriculum in The Netherlands and has never been a feature of teacher training. Attempts to establish a network of field centres in the
1970s were unsuccessful, and fieldwork is now the preserve of a small number of enthusiasts. The opportunities created by recent national curriculum reform in requiring pupils to engage in individual project
work has not stimulated fieldwork as much as might have been expected, as class-based study of secondary sources has become more important than enquiry outside the classroom.
