Teaching for Understanding in Primary Geography
|

Geography as a National Curriculum subject, like other foundation subjects, has tended to be marginalised because of the push to raise standards in literacy and numeracy and the emphasis for assessment
of the core curriculum areas. Yet an understanding of the world constructed through the study of geography has much to offer the primary age child. In this paper, what is meant by understanding in geography
is discussed and the place of geography in current curriculum legislation considered. Finally, some strategies teachers might use to support children in the development of their geographical understanding
are provided.
