Cholera, Rocket Ships and Tom's Veggies: Contemporary and Historical Ideas Towards the Effective Communication of School Performance
Howard Wainer

In this paper, three interlocking key areas associated with effectively and accurately conveying information about school performance to the public are discussed: (1) graphical display of (2) non randomly gathered data, that usually require (3) statistical adjustment. The essay is illustrated with historical examples that provide an evocative argument. Test data from NAEP and college admissions are compared as educational indicators, and the efficacy of statistical standardisation is discussed and illustrated.
