Schemes of Work in Primary Science: How are They Perceived by PGCE Primary Students Before and After Formal Training in a University-based Course?
Roy Phipps

Curriculum planning in primary science has been identified by the Office for Standards in Education (OFSTED) (1994) as a focus for development in what has otherwise been an area of outstanding curriculum success in the United Kingdom during the 1980s and 1990s. Schemes of work in primary science have frequently been criticised by Her Majesty s Inspectors (HMI) and OFSTED. Students and teachers have difficulty in writing them. This paper explores what a scheme of work is and offers a definition and ways for progressive development. It reviews the terminology used by different government agencies about planning the primary science curriculum. Research is presented into the perceptions of a primary science scheme of work held by a cohort of Postgraduate Certificate of Education (PGCE) students developed during three different school placements during their one-year Initial Teacher Education (ITE) course.Supportfrom schools during schoolpractice placements in terms of the schemes of work available to students is critically considered.
