Based on data from an ethnographic study of curriculum implementation in two rural schools in Fiji, this paper comments on the impact of summative assessment on study teachers pedagogic practice. It records
the domination of pedagogic practice by examination orientation of teachers and describes observed coping strategies employed by teachers in examination classes. Teachers pedagogic assumptions are highlighted,
to help locate the comments on assessment within the local context. The paper highlights the adverse effects of summative assessment and suggests balancing classroom assessment through greater emphasis
on formative and diagnostic assessment. The Fiji experience, in a sense, can prove instructive for those western countries which are in the process of moving towards national summative assessment policies.
