Foreign Language Teaching and Education for Intercultural and International Understanding
Peter Doye

In Europe today, foreign language teaching can no longer be restricted to the promotion of linguistic skills. It must try to contribute to the much wider task of an education for intercultural communicative competence and is in a good position to do so. The theoretical basis for such an education can be found mainly in intercultural pedagogy, political education, and the theory of socialisation. Two examples of how an education for intercultural communicative competence can be realised in practice are: Cultural Studies and World Studies.
